According to the latest data from global cybersecurity and performance company Cloudflare, TikTok, the overseas version of Douyin, surpassed Google to become the most visited platform on the Internet of the year. The video-sharing app topped the list for the first time in February and has held the top spot almost firmly since August. In addition, TikTok surpassed Facebook as the most popular social media platform.

"Social media continues to remain high in our rankings in the second year of the pandemic. On February 17, 2021, TikTok took the top spot for the first time," Cloudflare wrote in its annual review blog. “After August 10, 2021, TikTok has been in the lead most of the time.” It is also the only non-US website to occupy a place in the top 10 in Cloudflare rankings. In addition to the list are Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Twitter, and WhatsApp.

Cloudflare noted that the ranking was calculated using aggregated data on its internet traffic patterns. This data includes platform popularity, the percentage change in web traffic, and overall ranking change over the selected time period. TikTok ranked seventh last year, according to Cloudflare. But at the time the company only tracked statistics for the end-of-year months.

Affected by the epidemic, TikTok users have increased. TikTok said it had 1 billion monthly active users worldwide as of September, with nearly half of those users between the ages of 16 and 24. One report estimates that around 167 million TikTok videos are created and streamed every minute. By comparison, Google, which handles about 90 percent of the web's search tasks, totals just 5.7 million searches per minute. According to reports, looking at the development in the past few years, the popularity of TikTok has risen sharply.
